It usually comes down to how long you're staying. Asphalt shingles cost less now and suit most houses. Metal costs more and lasts longer, so it tends to make sense when the house is one you intend to keep.
Either way, the underlayment, flashing and ventilation matter as much as the surface. A good shingle roof installed over bad flashing still leaks, which is why our quotes itemise what goes underneath.
