Architectural vs. 3-tab shingles

Three-tab shingles are flat and uniform. Architectural (dimensional) shingles are thicker and layered, which gives the roof more depth, handles wind better and usually lasts longer. Most new installs today are architectural, and the price gap is smaller than people expect.

Picking a color

Darker shingles hide streaking and look sharp on brick; lighter ones reflect more heat. It's worth looking at samples against your siding and trim in daylight before you decide.

Installation details that matter

  • Underlayment over the whole deck, not just the eaves
  • Drip edge at the eaves and rakes
  • Step flashing and counter-flashing at walls and chimneys
  • Correct nailing, which decides how well shingles hold in high wind
  • Enough attic ventilation, so heat and moisture don't cook the shingles from underneath

How long do asphalt shingles last in North Carolina?Typically 20 to 25 years, depending on the shingle, the ventilation underneath and how much sun and storm the roof takes.
Are architectural shingles worth it?For most homes, yes. They're thicker, handle wind better and usually last longer than 3-tab shingles.
Can you match my existing shingles for a repair?We match as closely as the manufacturer's current colors allow. Older discontinued colors can be hard to match exactly.
